Oval handbag workshop: 3 day course

During this immersive course you will create an oval willow handbag with leather handles. This course has been especially designed as a workshop ideal for beginners and for those who enjoy learning through repetition. Allowing plenty of time to embed basic patterns and build on core techniques, the aim is to build your skills and fluency with the material over the three days. Places are limited to 6 people to give plenty of support to each participant, with Sarah on hand to guide you through each process. After three days you will have an oval tray (your practise piece) along with your very own willow handbag to take home with you.
 
 
COURSE DETAILS
 
Day One
The first day gives you chance to familiarise yourself with the material and with some of the key techniques. Each participant will create an oval tray on a pre-made oval hoop (using a Catalan base construction method), giving you the opportunity to practise the key skills in preparation for your oval handbag. Our attention will be on developing good hand positions and weaving techniques that means you’ll be able to manipulate the willow more effectively.
 
Day Two + Three
The next two days will be focused on embedding the skills you learned on day one, and then building on these by learning new weaving patterns for the sides of the handbag. Beginning by creating the base on a pre-made oval hoop (as practised on day one), you will then weave the sides of the basket,  before completing your handbag on the final day by weaving the border and adding leather handles. 
 
 
 
 
EXPERIENCE/SKILL LEVEL - BEGINNER'S CLASS
The course is aimed at beginners, including those coming to weave for the first time. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or if you’re wondering whether this course is for you.
 
ACCESSIBILITY:
Willow weaving is physically active in all areas. It can particularly hard on the hands, so is unsuitable for those who suffer from arthritis or other conditions that affect the hands. Courses will involve working at many levels, including bending down to the floor, working on laps or standing, and working seated at tables. If you have any physical difficulties in any of these areas, we advise you to contact us before booking.
 
WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:
Please bring a packed lunch. Please wear warm clothes you don't mind getting messy, and bring extra layers (we will be working in a large open space).
 
WHAT'S INCLUDED:
Materials and use of tools. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.
