Our asymmetric basket has been designed with days out in mind, whether in the woods in Spring picking wild garlic, or collecting chestnuts in autumn. This workshop has been developed as an introduction to weaving; working in a relaxed atmosphere, you will be given plenty of time to create your basket, focusing on a few key skills of willow weaving over the duration of the course.

Weaving in a small group, Sarah will be on hand to guide you through each process, and after two days you will have your very own gathering basket to take away with you.

Course outline

Day 1

We will begin the first day by learning how to select, sort and grade the material ready for the weekend’s weaving - an important skill to create a balanced basket. After completing the base, we will then stake up the basket and begin to weave the sides of baskets using a '3 rod wale' weaving pattern.

Day 2

We will finish weaving the sides of the basket in the morning before weaving the distinctive asymmetrical border section. Next you will choose a suitable wooden handle, before cutting and drilling it ready to be attached to your basket. Your basket will finally be trimmed ready to take home!

EXPERIENCE/SKILL LEVEL: Beginners

The course is aimed as an introduction to weaving for beginners. For those coming to weave for the first time, we advise creating a shallow version of the basket to give yourself plenty of time, and for those with a little more experience you may have time to create a slighter taller basket. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or if you’re wondering whether this course is for you: info@hopewoodbaskets.co.uk

ACCESSIBILITY:

Willow weaving is physically active in all areas. It can particularly hard on the hands, so is unsuitable for those who suffer from arthritis or other conditions that affect the hands. Courses will involve working at many levels, including bending down to the floor, working on laps or standing, and working seated at tables. If you have any physical difficulties in any of these areas, we advise you to contact us before booking.
