herringbone series 25

This body of work emerges from a longing to locate and understand one’s place—within the self, within the landscape, and within the passage of time. It reflects a search for rest and shelter, not as fixed destinations but as states of attention cultivated through making.

Working from a new studio nestled among the willow beds, Sarah spent the year weaving in close relationship with her immediate surroundings. Daily ritual walks informed the process, allowing observed rhythms, curves, and repetitions in the land to guide the development of form. The resulting works are rounded and weighty, their densely textured surfaces shaped from home-grown willow and informed by organic structures encountered over time.

The series unfolds as a record of seasonal change. Beginning in spring, hundreds of dandelions gathered from the grass between the willow rows were dried slowly in the summer sun, then twisted into lengths of cordage. This cordage was used to bind and wrap the wide rims of several pieces, producing silhouettes that recall ancient ceramic vessels and early acts of containment and care.

Made within the landscape that inspired them, using materials grown and gathered on site, these six works function as both reflection and record. They hold the imprint of time, labour, and direct engagement with the natural world, offering a quiet meditation on belonging, attentiveness, and the act of making as a way of knowing place.
