COURSE OVERVIEW

During this immersive course you will experiment with form and colour, and explore a range of different weaving patterns, with time to embed skills while creating two round ‘stake and strand’ willow baskets over three days. Weaving in a small group of just 6 people, Sarah will be on hand to guide you through each process. With the creative choices and design decisions in your hands, the course aims to provide an experience with willow - a truly wonderful natural material.

This workshop caters to anyone wishing to connect with their creative side, and those who want to explore both technique and design concepts.

COURSE DETAILS

Day One

The first day lays the foundations and gives you chance to familiarise yourself with the material and with some of the key techniques. Each participant will start with a base to use to create a small basket, ideal for storing things like kindling or yarn (for example). Our attention will be on learning how to create even spacing, how to develop good hand positions and weaving techniques that means you’ll be able to manipulate the willow more effectively, and through these processes you will develop a feel for the key weaving patterns.

Day Two + Three

The next two days will be focused on embedding the skills you learned on day one, and then building on these by learning new techniques and developing your own design. Choosing from a range of different sized pre-woven bases, you will work on a larger basket over two days, with Sarah on hand to help you create your individual and unique basket. You will have creative choices such as weaving patterns, shape, size, and handle options, as well as a range of willow varieties and colours to choose from. These larger baskets, personalised by you, will be suitable to be used as a log or laundry basket, but can of course by used to store whatever you choose.

EXPERIENCE/SKILL LEVEL

The course is suitable for complete beginners weaving for the first time, or for those who have made a handful of baskets before. For those who have made baskets previously, the course may help you to learn new weaving patterns, develop your skills in shaping the sides, and in material selection - vital to creating more refined and consistent baskets. Please feel free to contact me directly if you have questions or if you’re wondering whether this course is for you.

ACCESSIBILITY:

Willow weaving is physically active in all areas. It can particularly hard on the hands, so is unsuitable for those who suffer from arthritis or other conditions that affect the hands. Courses will involve working at many levels, including bending down to the floor, working on laps or standing, and working seated at tables. If you have any physical difficulties in any of these areas, we advise you to contact us before booking.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING:

Please bring a packed lunch. Please wear warm clothes you don't mind getting messy, and bring extra layers (we will be working in a large open space).

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

Materials and use of tools included. Tea, coffee and biscuits will be available throughout the day.

Cancellation Policy (summary):

This course is non-refundable, unless we can fill your place. Courses are non-transferable.
